Belmont Stakes 2022 contenders, odds, post draw, picks, top predictions: Legendary expert fading We the People

In 2007, Curlin lost by a head in the Belmont Stakes to Rags to Riches, who became the first filly in 102 years to win The Third Jewel of the Triple Crown. Fifteen years later, a dam of Curlin will attempt to finish one spot better than her sire at the 2022 Belmont Stakes. That filly, Nest, will try to join Rags to Riches as just the fourth female horse to win The Run for the Carnations. The Belmont Stakes 2022 will be Nest’s first race against the boys and she was runner-up at the Kentucky Oaks her last time out. The 154th running of the Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday with a 6:44 pm ET post time from Belmont Park. Nest drew the No. 3 post position and is 8-1 in the odds. The favorites in the latest 2022 Belmont Stakes odds are We the People (2-1), Mo Donegal (5-2) and Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (7-2). Before making any 2022 Belmont Stakes picks, you need to see what legendary handicapper Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg is saying.

The former horse racing analyst for ESPN and NBC, Goldberg became a legendary handicapper by going straight to the source. In 2004, he had dinner before the Belmont Stakes with trainer Nick Zito at a pizzeria in Queens. The dinner led Goldberg to play Zito’s 36-1 monster long shot Birdstone to win and on top of his exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets. When Birdstone shocked the world, Goldberg won $24,000.

His success has continued at SportsLine. In the San Felipe Stakes in March 2020, Hammer gave out a $20 exacta that paid 9-1. In the 2020 Belmont Stakes, Goldberg was all over Tiz the Law, who scored a convincing victory in the year’s first Triple Crown race. Hammer also nailed the exacta in the Blue Grass Stakes, Haskell Stakes and Pacific Classic that year.

Last year, he hit the Essential Quality-Hot Rod Charlie exacta in the Belmont Stakes. And three weeks ago he nailed the Early Voting-Epicenter exacta in the Preakness Stakes. Anyone who has followed him in these races is way up.

Now, he’s turned his attention to the 2022 Belmont Stakes field, made his picks and constructed his wagers. Head to Sports Line to see them.

2022 Belmont Stakes expert predictions

One surprise: Goldberg is completely fading We the People, even though he is the morning-line favorite, at 2-1. We the People only has a single graded stakes victory and it came at the Grade III Peter Pan Stakes last month. However, that race didn’t have the strongest of fields. In fact, it only had one other horse in it who will appear in any of the Triple Crown races this year. And that horse — Golden Glider — is the biggest long shot at the Belmont.

Hammer also notes that the Peter Pan had a sealed track, which aided We the People considering his pacesetter running style. He’s unlikely to see those track conditions again at the Belmont, thus negating his biggest strength. Goldberg is fading the favorite and doesn’t even have We the People finishing in the money.

“I don’t think he’s as good as his Peter Pan win suggests,” Goldberg told SportsLine. “That race was run on a sealed, sloppy track, and those tracks very often help horses win gate-to-wire, which he did.”

How to make 2022 Belmont Stakes picks

Hammer’s top pick is a long shot who is “great value” and is a “perfect fit” with his jockey. Goldberg is including this horse in his 2022 Belmont Stakes bets, and so should you. He’s sharing which horses to back only at SportsLine.
